Visit to Stone Quarry Entrance, Aug. 4, 2023
If you travel up to Manley Road and turn left on the Upper
Ravine Road, you will come to the entrance to the Stone Quarry in about
3 miles. The last half will be on a section that is not maintained from
Nov. 1-April 1. However, if you approach from Rt. 12, turning right
past Lowe's and use the road to the Valley Ridge Intensive Treatment
center, it is only about 50 yards to the extensive parking area built by
the Chenango Greenway Conservancy.
The entrance from the parking lot to the trail is well
marked. It is about 1 1/2 miles to enter the quarry if you use the
trail along the ridge. The trail seems more level than the one from
Wheeler Avenue in Norwich.
The Conservancy has held several bicycle races in the
quarry, and public campfires. The Conservancy is also working with the
Norwich School Board (which owns Hillcrest) in an effort to manage the
trails of both properties as uniform systems and improve stewardship of
Hillcrest.
And our Norwich High School classmate (1955) Mary Jeanne
Mody's grandson is a salaried worker in the quarry during this summer.
Harry Winter
Aug. 10, 2021, Harris died of respiratory failure. Gerry is bringing his ashes back from NC to her family's plot in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne, NY. Harris loved to talk about the time coyotes treed him on the trail from Mt. Hope Cemetery to Hillcrest. May we appreciate the many ways Harris helped Hillcrest, over the years.
Farewell to Harris and Gerry Manwarren, Great
Supporters of Hillcrest, March 2018
