Recognition to Our Hillcrest Park

Norwich High is privileged to own 53 acres on West Hill near the
stone quarry as an area in which students may learn conservation practices
by first-hand experience. This was purchased in June, 1951, and named the
Hillcrest Conservation Park. Since that time much work has been done
such as the cleaning out of forest lands by the agriculture boys, the clearing of trails, planting of trees, building of game shelters, and the construction of a muskrat marsh. Through the years we hope this area will
prove a great asset to our school in the training of youth to be better
citizens; this is all part of our same glorious NHS spirit.

Our teachers formed a Committee on Conservation, with Mr. Gibson
as chairman, Miss O’Neil as secretary, and Mr. Sheldon and Mr. Anderson
as advisors, to assist in policies of the Park. Student wardens banded into
a group called the Hillcrest Conservation Park Service. Luana Crawford
was the chairman of this and the Service was divided into three sections:
Rangers with Dave Myers as head, Public Relations with Nancy Brawn as
head, and Engineers with Harry Winters as head.

Future Farmers of America

When Tillage Beings, Other Arts Follow

The primary aim of the F. F. A. is the development of agricultural
leadership, cooperation, and citizenship, to the end, that one day
all farmers have been trained and have learned to cooperate.
Various activities of the group were a speaking contest, testing,
and selling seeds, planting trees, sponsoring a banquet, and participating in the Farm and Home Week at Cornell..
This year the boys have worked faithfully improving the Hillcrest Conservation Park and justly deserve credit for their labor.
