The Chenango Greenway River Trails provide a scenic, multi-use trail system along the Chenango River, perfect for walking, running, and biking.
Originating in the 1970s, the trails connect key areas like Greenway Park, Baker Dog Park, and Patsy’s Riverview, a 5-acre hub with plans for an overlook terrace and walking paths. Supported by the community, the trails offer a peaceful escape to enjoy nature, wildlife, and outdoor activities within the city.
The Greenway River Trails started out as the “City of Norwich Greenbelt Park Project”. This was envisioned as a public, multi-use, run-walk-bike trail system along the Chenango River, within the city limits.
In 2006, that idea was rekindled.
Since its founding, the Chenango Greenway Conservancy has worked to toward developing multi-use trails for our community.
The original Greenbelt Park Project was the foundation of these efforts.
Patsy’s Riverview
In late 2022 we poured our river overlook terrace.
In 2023 we will install concrete benches, a gravel parking area, and crushed-stone walking paths!
Thanks to some much-appreciated help from the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) we recently broke ground on the observation area mentioned above.
The Patsy’s Riverview is a scenic 5-acre parcel generously gifted to the Chenango Greenway Conservancy in 2019 by Patsy Smith, with the heartfelt wish that it be preserved as public, open space.
Located right in the City of Norwich, Patsy’s Riverview is already developed with walking trails, benches, and a beautiful butterfly garden that blooms in the summer—making it a peaceful spot to sit, relax, watch the river, observe wildlife, and connect with nature.
Trails from Patsy’s Riverview lead directly to the Baker Dog Park and Greenway Park, about ¼ mile to the north.
We’re also working toward agreements to connect the North and South River Trails at this location, helping create a fully linked trail system along the Chenango River.
Greenway Park, located just off River Street in Norwich, is the perfect spot for family fun, a relaxing picnic, or a scenic stroll along the Greenway Trails.
The park features a pavilion with picnic tables and grills, a playground for kids, and plenty of space to unwind by the river.
Best of all—Baker Dog Park is right next door, so bring your furry family members along for the adventure!
A new place to play.
A new playground at Greenway Park was built over the course of two days in August 2021.
Community support is essential to the success of our projects. Dozens of volunteers showed up to make this happen, including volunteers from the Chenango Greenway Conservancy, NBT Bank, and the Norwich High School Girls Varsity Swim Team.
Through a collaboration between the Parks Commission, the Department of Public Works, and the Chenango Greenway Conservancy, funds were secured from the City of Norwich and from a generous grant from the Roger Follet Foundation.
