Let's Open West Hill For the Community
High above our city is a land of history, fascination, and recreation. For generations we have timbered, quarried, farmed and hid out on our western skyline.
The Chenango Greenway Conservancy has been leading the effort to preserve and enhance the outdoor treasures on our doorstep. Few towns have such easy access to trails taking us into the heart of a woodland or the peaceful banks of a forest lined river. From hiking to mountain biking to sitting and strolling, we have the luxury to be both outside and inside nature close at hand.
A generational opportunity has become available that would complete the Greenway skyline. The historic Smith Farm above route 10A is known to our residents by its iconic mowed slope with its marching metal elephants. This was part of the Norwich home of the Smith Family of Bill and Patsy Smith, previous owners of the past Smith Ford dealership. Patsy and her family have been generous with the Greenway, gifting the riverside parcel named Patsy’s Riverview. Their land and buildings west and south of 10A are now for sale at a very reasonable price. The Smith family is committed to preservation and outdoor recreation and so are happy we are a partner in the sale.
This property when added to Stone Quarry s a natural extension to securing the western slope for recreational conservancy. It will provide new landscapes for mountain biking, hiking, and a second high vista above our valley. Its upper reaches include a tranquil pond, and an open park environment. The historic buildings will enable them to become a home for outdoor education, a gathering shop for mountain bikers, a third access to West Hill, and a prime location for outdoor social events.
We invite you to be part of this legacy — your contribution will help the Greenway purchase this treasured property and open it up for the entire community to explore, enjoy, and learn from for generations to come
