Big News: The Greenway is Growing
High above Norwich lies a hillside many of us know and love — a place of open meadows, quiet trails, and those unforgettable marching metal elephants. Now, that special spot is becoming something even more meaningful: part of our community forever.
Recognized by many for its expansive meadow, striking sculptures, and sweeping views above Route 10A, this beloved landscape has been thoughtfully cared for by Bill and Patsy Smith for decades. Patsy’s previous gift, now known as Patsy’s Riverview, opened up a beautiful public access to the Chenango River. Today, we’re excited to take the next step with them to conserve West Hill and open for public use. This purchase completes the Greenway skyline and creates new possibilities for outdoor recreation, environmental education, and community gathering.
“We are so pleased for what the Greenway’s ownership will mean to future generations of local residents and Chenango County visitors.” – Patsy Smith
What’s Included in the Purchase
- 110 acres of scenic, forested land that connects to our existing Stone Quarry trails
- Historic farm buildings that we plan to renovate into public-use spaces
- A tranquil pond, open park-like areas, and a new scenic overlook above the valley
What Comes Next
We envision turning the existing buildings into a community hub — a place for:
- Outdoor learning and exploration
- Trail access for hikers, bikers, and families
- Small events and gatherings that celebrate nature, creativity, and connection
We’re not just conserving land — we’re creating a space for exploration, education, and meaningful community experiences.
How We’re Funding This
We’ve have been busy applying for State and local grants which if awarded, will help fund the purchase and development. However, we are also actively seeking private support to ensure the project moves forward — whether or not the full grant is received.
This is where you come in.
Be Part of the Legacy
You’ve seen what we’ve accomplished at the Stone Quarry — now join us as we take the next step together on West Hill.
We’re inviting local residents, businesses, and supporters to join us in securing this land for the future. Whether you give $100 or $2,500, your contribution helps protect West Hill and build something lasting for Norwich.
Together, we can make this vision a reality — and preserve a piece of Norwich’s natural beauty for everyone to enjoy.
